About The College

"The Creative Arts in Scarborough have been part of our College for over 130 years..The origins of the college date back to 1882 when artist and yacht designer Albert Strange was the first Headmaster of Scarborough School of Art. In 1938, through mergers with the Evening Institutes, the school became Scarborough Technical Institute
and in 1992 with provision expanding to meet the needs of the local community, the name Yorkshire Coast College was adopted. Building on our heritage, we are expanding our provision under the Scarborough School of Arts name to show our commitment to maintaining our leading position for Arts Education in the region. Our current home at the Westwood Campus has
a rich and diverse cultural heritage. The Municipal School opened in 1902. becoming the High School for Boys in 1922. Between the years of 1976 and 1996 Westwood Campus was the home of the prestigious Stephen Joseph Theatre under Sir Alan Ayckbourn. The Theatre In The Round at Westwood hosted 232 productions of which, 106 were world premieres."

Scarborough School of Arts teaches Art & Design; Costume; Music and Performing Arts to individuals from various ways of life and academic levels. Most courses are taught through from Level 2 (introductory), Level 3 (equivalent to A Level) and Level 4 which is designed to help prepare individuals for a career in their chosen industry, help them look into the areas they would like to specialise in, and perhaps prepare for university if they did not choose to go onto university after the completion of their Level 3 Diploma.
We are a really close community of creative individuals and it is a brilliant opportunity to network with people as well as develop and learn new skills.

About The Editor

Greetings Friends!

My name is Jessie Law; and I am a student on the Level 4 Artist Development Course at the Scarborough School of Arts college; part of Yorkshire Coast College and the Grimsby Institute Group. More affectionately; our college as known as Westwood; as in the Westwood Campus at YCC.
Whilst I love all aspects of music - from composition through to performance - I find I have a certain affinity for “writing stuff.” Be it poetry, prose, or downright drivel stored in notes on my mobile phone (an area nobody should want to explore; ever); words enthuse me and I am aware that it could be seen as a little sad. However, I realised not long ago that this could be the pathway to a beautiful career; and thus I have decided to delve into the throes of journalism (yay!).
My project for this year is to create couple of issues of a magazine; with its accompanying blog, about the college, with the help of some other students. While it will be mainly music-orientated; I would very much like to get everyone involved, from all of the departments we have in our lovely college.
We will be covering in-college events, and student work as well as insights into student life; things to do; local and world news (and what it means in layman’s terms) crazy adventures, and lots of nice pictures courtesy of the wonders that are smart phones. I will also include some of the must-have traditional magazine elements - cheesy horoscopes, sudoku, and the elusive agony aunt.
I hope you will all enjoy this endeavor as much as I do, and excuse my eccentricities - as we are all slightly bonkers here, are we not?
If you want to get involved in any way, shape or form; do check out the contact and where-to-find-us details in the ‘Contact Us’ section, and get in touch - I don’t bite!

Well wishes to you all;

Jessie ♪♫
